According to the US Census Bureau of 2001, Lake County is the
ninth most populous county, with approximately 26,100 residents.
The county seat, Polson Montana, named after Mission Valley stockman David
Polson, is the 18th largest city in Montana with an approximant population of
4,041, according to the 2000 Census. Common history shows the county was on of
the last counties formed, established in 1923. The authors add Flathead Lake was
the inspiration for Lake County's name and Polson was named for Mission Valley
stockman David Polson.
Lake County resides within the Flathead Reservation, established by the Hell
Gate Treaty of 1855 and is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
The CSKT headquarters is centered in Pablo Montana, and includes the Tribal
Complex, The People’s Center, and SKC Tribal College. For more information about

Lake County is also home to the Mission Valley and
Mission Mountain Range,
Flathead Lake, the
National Bison Range,
Bob Marshall Wilderness and close to
Glacier National Park.
