As of the census of 2000, there are 26,507 people, 10,192 households, and 7,215 families residing in the county. There are 13,605 housing units at an average density. The racial makeup of the county is 71.38% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 23.79% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 3.70% from two or more races. 2.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,740, and the median income for a family is $34,033. Males have a median income of $27,009 versus $19,162 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,173. 18.70% of the population and 14.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.20% of those under the age of 18 and 8.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Polson Montana Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,041 people, 1,739 households, and 1,052 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,490.9 people per square mile (575.7/kmē). There were 1,977 housing units at an average density of 729.4 per square mile (281.7/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 78.25% White, 0.15% African American, 16.11% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 4.50% from two or more races. There were 1,739 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The racial makeup of the city was 62.42% White, 0.11% African American, 33.06% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 3.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.37% of the population.

There were 699 households out of which 34.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.6% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% were non-families. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 84.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.5 males.

Charlo Montana Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 439 people, 166 households, and 112 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 219.4 people per square mile (84.7/kmē). There were 175 housing units at an average density of 87.5 per square mile (33.8/kmē). The racial makeup of the CDP was 76.77% White, 1.14% African American, 17.77% Native American, 2.05% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.73% of the population.

There were 166 households out of which 42.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 36.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $24,167, and the median income for a family was $32,500. Males had a median income of $25,577 versus $17,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $10,687. About 16.0% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.9% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.

As of the census of 2000, there were 788 people, 307 households, and 194 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,509.1 people per square mile (585.1/kmē).
